We Upgraded Our RV Lock | Step-by-Step Guide
In our camper travels, we have found that having a keyless entry option is the way to go rather than both of us having to carry the key around at all times.
On our previous travel trailer, an Airstream Basecamp, it came with a keyless RVLock that we really liked, and so when we purchased our new camper, a Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX, we knew we wanted to replace the factory lock with an upgraded RVLock.
There are several brands that sell the keyless lock, but RVLock is the industry standard, and for good reason – it’s a solid product. We never had issues with it in our previous camper, which we owned for five years.
In this guide, we share the step-by-step instructions for how to change out your lock and install an upgraded one.
Tools Used to Upgrade our RV Lock
- RVLock Keyless Entry
- Screwdriver or Drill (phillips)
Step-by-Step Installation Instructions
Step One: remove the original lock
On the factory installed lock, you’ll see there are screws on the interior of the door where the handle is. Remove these screws and you’ll be able to lift off that interior handle.
When you remove this interior piece, the exterior portion will come off as well.
Next, look at the plate where the door latch is and you’ll see screws holding it in. Remove the screws and the entire lock will come out.
On ours, it was fit in there pretty tight, so we had to maneuver it out.
Step Two: install the door latch
The RVLock comes separated into three pieces – the interior handle, the exterior handle, and the door latch mechanism.
We installed the door latch in first because the other two pieces will connect to that.
You put the latch in and there are two screws where you will screw the door latch down.
Step Three: install the exterior keypad and interior handle
Then we installed the exterior piece, which has the key code on it. There are no screws for this part because the screws go into the inside handle.
Then, connect the wire harness from the exterior keypad to the interior piece, which has the door handle and red manual lock. It is a simple plug that connects together.
At this point, all three pieces will be on the door and you’ll just need to screw in the interior portion.
Step Four: set the code and pair the remotes
Lastly, you’ll want to set the code.
To do this, there is a pin hole on the inside handle for the reset button – you will need a pin to push it in. Hold it down and you’ll be instructed to enter your new code.
Step Five: hide the magnetic keyholder
The lock comes with a magnetic keyholder. We recommend finding a place on the frame underneath to mount this.
And that’s it!
The entire installation process took about 10 – 15 minutes.
The interior handle is not very big, so we bought and installed a grab bar on the inside of the door to make it easier.
